This is false. I can think of many examples where graphically impressive games today are better than those old games. Compare a modern action adventure game, such as Uncharted 3 to an graphically ugly rpg game like Ocarina of Time and its pretty clear which of those two games is the better one. Another one, compare a modern platformer such as Sonic Unleashed to an older graphically ugly platformer, such as say Yoshi’s Island, and its yet again clear that the newer platformer is better. And for the last case, compare a modern racer, such as Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (2010) to an older atrocious looking racer, say Mario Kart Wii, and it is clear which game is better, Hot Pursuit due to better graphics. All things considered, a game with amazing graphics is always the better game.

I have to disagree, especially on behalf of the comparison of Sonic to Yoshi. Everyone knows the later Sonic games are awful and that Yoshi’s Island is easily a superior game in all aspects. Sure, it’s not as pretty, but who cares about looks when the gameplay is sorely lacking.
This is the point they were talking about. Graphics are not the end all be all of videogames, if you want that than go rent a movie. Games are meant to be played, and to be played they must be playable to some extent.
I will agree that Uncharted 3 is a better game than Ocarina of Time. However, graphics has nothing to do with that at all, it comes down to the gameplay. But, this is not a fair comparison since Ocarina came out almost nine years ago.
Also, I’d rather play Mario Kart than any of the Need for Speed games. Why? It’s way more fun.

How so. I played Yoshi’s Island and found it to be an overly difficult and annoying experience, much more annoying than the awkward placement of traps and pitfalls in those modern Sonic Games. At least in Sonic there wasnt a baby that was constantly crying with a ten second timer that would always fly as far away from Yoshi as possible. Talk about a broken game mechanic to artificially raise difficulty to unfair levels. Sonic’s gameplay has never been lacking, theres never been anything to inhibit Sonic from going fast in the games, and modern games have delivered the sense and the need for speed that players crave from Sonic. The graphics greatly enhanced the gameplay experience by delivering breathtaking vistas to speed through while intertwining that with awesome visual effects such as great particle physics, gratuitous lighting, and generous amounts of motion blurring ultimately leading to the game being more than just going from point A to B, but going from point A to B in the most beautiful way possible. Fun comes more from the gameplay but from speeding through these vistas while seeing Sonic do what Sonic does best.
How is not a fair comparison. The statement simply states that better graphics make the better game which is true. If a game were truly good then its graphics would stand the test of time, wouldnt they? Similar to a movie, say Jurassic Park whose graphics still appear to stand the test of time.  If the graphics look dated then sadly that means the game is dated and most likely had dated and old gameplay mechanics with ugly graphics to make it a terrible experience.
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit has better racing elements for one, glorious drool inducingly epic looking cars, and gorgeous motion blurring and weather effects. Mario Kart Wii lacked these great cars and graphics, and lastly, it had terrible level design (levels as wide as an entire shopping mall) and lastly Mario Kart didnt rely on skill but rather lady luck.

Now you’re talking gameplay mechanics and not just graphics alone… So that kinda hinders your argument in saying that graphics are the only contributing factor to a games potential. While baby Mario was, in fact, annoying… it’s rather laughable to compare it to Sonic Unleashed. Had you instead compared it to Sonic Adventure, I would have more readily agreed to the game being better. Again though, it’s a question of time. Making graphical comparisons to games that are many years apart is unfair to say the least. Basing it, instead, on gameplay would be a much more stable argument/ How about, instead, comparing games that are from the same time and have equal good points about them. Then the one that looks better could more easily seen as a “better” choice. However, the opinion that “graphics make the game” is one that I will forever find issue with as is discounts all the games that came before to make any of the current ones possible.
Either you are trolling hard, or this is perhaps the most hilarious thing I’ve read/posted on my Tumblr ever. If so, I might just have to get a frame for this baby.

Specifically, like I said before the only way for a game across another time apart to be better, would be if it had graphics that stood the test of time. That means, games that are newer, that is today, are, if they have good graphics, by default better than games of old. Uncharted 3 is better than Tetris, Gran Turismo 5 is better than Mario Kart NES, Sonic Unleashed is better than Super Mario Galaxy, LittleBigPlanet 2 is better than Super Mario Bros. Even looking on this generation, Battlefield 3 is better than Metroid Prime Mother M. Graphics is the only comparison that matters, as what do gamers focus on first when playing a game? They focus on that which they see, that which is pleasing to their eye. No one plays games blinded folded or buys a game based on “the game features guns that have alternate fire modes and 40 different grenades in levels feature numerous pitfalls and barricades with larger than life obstacles and definitive AI opponents with support for DLC and multiplayer”. No, games buy it on, “Oh snaps this game is mind blowing 1080P and features such huge epic destruction and environments and particle effects that make the game look like non stop action that blurs the lines between cinema and game with characters that rival that of real life and ultra photorealism”. Looked t this years game of the year list and see that the games that won GOTY all have glorious graphics, not gameplay that was “new and unique”.  Games with awesome graphics are always games that feature good gameplay, theres no beautiful game with bad gameplay.

All I can say is: LOL
I’m just gonna leave this here while I find a frame.
